Greens Farms Grad Wins Teacher Award

Pam Forsythe’s teachers at Greens Farms Academy in Westport would watch her interact with younger students and knew she would make a great teacher herself someday. And they were correct.

Pam, now Mrs. Sullivan, has been a star teacher at Wilton’s Miller-Driscoll elementary school for the past 18 years. She taught first grade for the first three years and kindergarten for the rest. Now she is also a resident of Wilton and has a son in the Wilton School District.

“I have only taught in Wilton. I did my student-teaching here with a family member of a person I work with now,” said Sullivan. “It is a neat symmetry.”

And the Miller-Driscoll community is lucky that symmetry occurred. Sullivan — one of three grand prize winners of Main Street Connect’s Star Teacher Award , is beloved by her students, her students’ parents, the PTO and her colleagues.

“Mrs. Sullivan is Star Teacher because she is everything a kindergarten teacher should be -- kind, steady, nurturing, fun and extremely, extremely patient,” said Tracy Taylor, a parent of one of Sullivan’s current students. “When my daughter started kindergarten, she was the ultimate shy girl, afraid to speak at circle time, scared to join groups of new faces on the playground. Mrs. Sullivan didn't hold her hand, but she didn't throw her in the deep end of the pool either. She has helped my daughter quickly grow from the quiet girl in the corner to a chatterbox who actively participates in all activities at school.’ ”

Principal Cheryl Jensen-Gerner agrees that Sullivan is a Star Teacher and believes Miller-Driscoll has many more teachers of excellence. “Pam is the epitome of the teachers that we have here. When we honor one star teacher, by virtue, we honor all of them.”

Sullivan, who grew up in Westport and later Weston, is happy how her life has turned out and she was deeply touched that so many people took the time to acknowledge and vote for her.

“I am so lucky,” said Sullivan, as she knocked on wood, about her life choice of becoming a teacher, working in Wilton, winning this award and her family.
