How many pounds of flour does it take to cause a major traffic jam on the Merritt Parkway in Westport? Nearly 30,000 pounds. A tractor-trailer carrying that much flour is to blame for a traffic jam after it struck the North Avenue overpass near Exit 42 north early Tuesday afternoon.
Commercial vehicles such as tractor-trailers are not allowed on the Merritt Parkway. According to published reports, the driver of the truck didn't see the sign prohibiting commercial vehicles when he got on the roadway.
The accident held up traffic for about five hours, with northbound traffic on the Merritt backed up as far as Exit 37, reports said. Both the driver and overpass were unharmed. No flour was spilled in the accident.
