The Stars and Stripes will fly once again across the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge thanks to the generosity of a private donor. The display of flags will stay up through November.
Its tradition, its patriotic and most of all its pretty, said Debbie Fieber as she sat with her best friend Patricia Zins on a bench near the bridge. Thats why were sitting here, its the prettiest spot.
Westport Now reported that Public Works Director Stephen Edwards said the $2,500 needed to keep the flags up was one of the costs he had to do away with when his budget took a $1 million cut. Each year flags have to be replaced due to damage and theft.
If the cost of putting them up is the problem I would think they could hire kids to do it for like $10 an hour, said Zins.
The unnamed donor is associated with Sterling Investment Partners. Both Zins and Fieber said the donation was a kind and generous offer.
