Fire Damages Chimney of Easton Home

EASTON, Conn. — A motorist driving by a home on Valley Road last week reported flames shooting from the chimney. The Easton Fire Department responded and extinguished the blaze with assistance from the Redding Fire Department.

Police said the fire was a “very minor” incident involving the chimney insert, which became clogged and caused the fire. Police said even though there were flames coming out of the chimney, there was no fire in the house.

Police said there was no one inside the home at the time of the fire, reported at 8:42 a.m. on March 27. Police were able to contact the homeowner. The brick chimney received structural damage in the fire.

? John Nabor, 56, of Easton turned himself in to police March 28 on a warrant charging failure to plead or pay an infraction for not licensing his dog. Nabor was released on $200 bond and is due in Bridgeport Superior Court on April 4.

? Daniel Chaves, 38, of Easton was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, third-degree assault and disorderly conduct Thursday following a dispute at his home with his former wife.

According to the police report, officers arrived at the scene shortly before 7 p.m. on a call from Chaves’ mother, who lives at the same residence, reporting that Chaves' former wife, Carla Soto, 27, of Milford, who was charged with breach of peace, was at the house.  Police said there was no court order restricting her from being there.

Chaves’ mother told police that Chaves was intoxicated and was punching doors in the house. She added that both Chaves and Soto, who have a 4-year-old child, were asked to leave the property.

The report said police confronted Chaves in the front of the house and that he fought with officers and resisted arrest.

Chaves and Soto were released on a promise to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on March 30.
