Ex-Westporter Appeared in War Film

Herbert C. Hartmann Sr., a former Westport resident who appeared in the 1944 movie "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo," died Oct. 25 at his son's home in Old Saybrook. He was 94.

Hartmann was a resident of Jupiter, Fla. He was born in Brooklyn on May 2, 1916, E Hattended Peter Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan and began his professional career at Chase Bank. He worked at Chase six years before joining IBM, where he worked five years.

He later worked for Fairchild Camera in Jamaica, N.Y., where had a role in the film about a bombing mission over Japan. He subsequently became a production manager for American Bosch Corp. in Springfield, Mass., before returning to IBM, where he worked more than 28 years in manufacturing control until retiring in 1981.

Hartmann enjoyed traveling, fishing, bridge and sports. He had been a champion at the Manhattan Table Tennis Academy multiple times.

He was predeceased by his wife, Greta Hartmann. Survivors are his companion, Becky Friedel of Tuckahoe, N.Y.; a son, Herbert Hartmann Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Old Saybrook; a daughter, Janet Holt and her husband, Gene, of Cumming, Ga.; four grandsons, one granddaughter and 13 great-grandchildren. He was also predeceased by his sister, Amy.

The funeral will take place Saturday, Oct. 30, 10 a.m. at Saugatuck Congregational Church in Westport.

Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Fairfield. Calling hours are Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road, Fairfield.
