Fairfield native Elinor Jennings Mills died Jan. 11 at the Lutheran Home of Southbury two days before her 97th birthday. Elinor and her husband were among the last remaining farmers in Westport.
Mills was born Jan. 13, 1914, in Fairfield. She graduated from Greenfield Hill's Timothy Dwight School and from Roger Ludlowe High School in 1933. She then worked at General Electric's Bridgeport plant until 1943.
She moved to Westport in 1940 after marrying Clifton Hoyt Mills. Together, they raised chickens at their Westport home and continued to sell eggs to local customers for decades. Mills also enjoyed crewel, crochet and sewing and working in her flower and vegetable gardens.
Mills is survived by son Clifton Mills Jr., of Northfield, N.H.; daughter Virginia Lewis of Kent; sister Shirley Fredericks of Easton; and three grandchildren, two great-granddaughters and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents Sarah Marguerite Knapp and Clifford Leslie Jennings; twin sister Evelyn Banks; sister Helene Deary; son-in-law Lawrence Lewis Sr.; and close cousin Beatrice Cedarholm.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 S. Benson Road, Fairfield. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Jess Lee United Methodist Church in Easton. Burial will be private in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Fairfield.
