Eastonites Get the Information They Wanted

EASTON, Conn. – Documents provided to Easton's boards and commissions and other town information will now be posted on the town's website and be available in the town clerk's office.

Town Clerk Derek Buckley began posting the documents on the town's website in response to a discussion at a recent town meeting about how difficult it is to get information about events. His actions are also a response to a recent story on The Daily Easton in which multiple residents complained about a lack of information from the town.

"There have also been many comments about how board and committee meetings are conducted," Buckley wrote in a letter to First Selectman Thomas Herrmann. "Board members discuss documents without the public having a copy before or during the meeting."

At the Aug. 18 Board of Selectmen meeting, a copy of the packet given to the selectmen was available for the public to peruse. All documents provided to the town clerk by the boards and commissions, and comments from the public, can be posted on the town's website.

Documents are also available in a drawer in the town's vault. In a letter to Buckley, Herrmann says, "To that end, we firmly endorse making any and all public information available to the public."

Buckley said he would start with the Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance meetings and expand to include others. For the Aug. 18 meeting, documents concerning a grant application were posted under the events calendar on the town's website. Buckley said no one is objecting to his efforts.
