Easton Teen Killed May Have Been Pushing ATV

The Joel Barlow High School student might not have been driving his ATV when he was killed in an accident early Saturday, Easton police reported.

Robert Smuniewski , 18, of Morning Glory Drive, Easton, was killed shortly after midnight when he was struck by a car on Sport Hill Road. Easton police are looking into whether Smuniewski was pushing the all-terrain vehicle or driving it when the accident occurred.

The original police report indicated that Smuniewski was "operating an ATV," but police also received several calls from people saying he was pushing the Yamaha Sunstar four-wheeler on the road, which is state Route 59. The accident occurred just south of Harvest Moon Road.

He was hit by a 1991 Honda Accord driven by Stewart Lahey, 84, of Atwater Street, Bridgeport. Both vehicles have been impounded, and a forensic investigation is under way to determine the details of the accident, police said. No charges have been filed in the fatal accident.

Students at Barlow honored Smuniewski's memory on Monday by dressing in his trademark style, which included dress pants and button-down shirt, school officials said.
