Easton Police Chief To Retire, Blames Budget

After 16 years, Easton Police Chief John Solomon will retire effective Dec. 31, and he cited budget constraints in making the announcement.

“I have decided that this is the best manner by which to reduce spending without the loss of any patrol officers. By my choosing to retire in six months, the town of Easton will experience significant savings and the department will be able to retain its two newest officers,” Solomon said in a statement Thursday.

Capt. James Candee will become chief in 2012. He has been the department’s executive officer throughout Solomon’s career.

“In light of the current economic environment, the Board of Finance made the decision to significantly reduce the police personnel budget. Because of that reduction, difficult choices had to be made as to where to reduce spending. If I remained in office as chief for the forthcoming fiscal year, the only option available to reach the budget cuts imposed would have been to eliminate patrol officers," Solomon said. "I strongly believe a sufficiently staffed police force is vital to our public safety and I could not in good conscience allow that to happen. Easton was recently voted the safest small town in Connecticut by the Connecticut Magazine, and it was and is my desire to see that our citizens continue to receive the service that led to that finding.

“The decision to retire in the immediate future was a difficult one for me personally. After much thought and deliberation, I have decided that this is the best manner by which to reduce spending without the loss of any patrol officers. By my choosing to retire in six months, the Town of Easton will experience significant savings and the department will be able to retain its two newest officers.”
