Earthplace Opens Trails for Dog Event

There's an incentive for those planning to participate in the second Annual Walk for Wildlife on Sept. 26 in Westport: Register online by the end of the day Wednesday to receive a free T-shirt.

Organized by Earthplace, the nature discovery center, Walk for Wildlife is a 2-mile hike for people and their dogs through the center's 85-acre wildlife sanctuary. Money raised goes to support the center's Wildlife Rehabilitation and Animal Care programs, which help hundreds of injured birds and mammals each year, said Linda Roberts, director of these programs.

"Normally, we don't allow dogs on the premises, so it really is a special opportunity for dogs and their owners," Roberts said.

This year's event, held at Earthplace from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., will also benefit Animal Hall and Animal Ambassador programs.

More than just a nature walk, the event includes various activities such as dog-agility demonstrations, search-and-rescue demonstrations and K-9 demonstrations. A silent auction, pet-related vendors and exhibits, rescue dogs available for adoption, and treats for dogs and owners will also be offered.

"It's going to be awesome," Roberts said. "We're really looking forward to it."

To register, visit the event page on the Earthplace website. There is a $15 entry fee for the first dog entered and a $5 fee for the second. Each participant is allowed a maximum of two dogs. Walkers must be 18 years or older to sign up.
