A funeral was held Monday at Congregation Beth El in Norwalk for Westport resident Dr. Joseph J. Okon, a physician and philanthropist who died May 6. He was 61.
Born in New York City, Okon attended Columbia University and earned a medical degree at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Throughout his career, he focused on obtaining funding for the advancement of medical education.
Okon was a lifelong philanthropist who was especially dedicated to providing a Jewish education to those in need. He was also a member of several boards of directors, including UJA Federation and Bi-Cultural Day School.
He established the Joseph J. Okon Associates, a consulting firm that helps nonprofits conceptualize and plan new programs and initiatives.
Okon is survived by three sons, Benjamin, Ezra and Alexander Okon, all of Westport. He was predeceased by a brother, Dr. Paul Okon.
