WESTPORT, Conn. With thousands of people expected to visit downtown Westport this weekend for the Downtown Merchants Associations 38th annual Fine Arts Festival , organizers like Cathy Colgan and Steve Desloge are busy finalizing the details.
"We'll see at least 5,000 people, if not more, over the weekend," said Desloge, chairman of the event. "This is the largest fundraiser for the Downtown Merchants Association . It allows us to put on all our other events."
The festival, which kicks off Saturday morning, will feature about 140 artists from across the country, Desloge said. Although the majority of the artists in the show aren't from the area, some local artists, like Westport graphic designer Miggs Burroughs , will be featured.
A panel will pick a "best in show" and name winners in drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and watercolor categories.
"This event certainly attracts people from outside Westport," he said. "We get people from all over Fairfield County and Westchester County. People come because they know they'll find a high caliber of art, and many are looking to buy."
Though it's a fine arts event, Desloge said it's geared toward families. The Westport Arts Center will have a tent set up where children can put their creativity to work. The festival will also feature balloon artists, face painters, street performers and live music.
Several downtown restaurants, including Blue Lemon, Da Pietro and Oscar's Deli, will be on hand to provide food and drinks.
The festival takes place at Parker Harding Plaza and Gorham Island, Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
