Connecticut Lowers Flags To Half-Staff To Honor Texas Shooting Victims

U.S. and state flags in Connecticut will fly at half-staff beginning immediately and running until sunset Thursday, Nov. 9, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced Monday.

This is in accordance with a proclamation from President Donald Trump, directing flags to be lowered to honor the victims of the mass shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

Accordingly, since no flag should fly higher than the U.S. flag, all other flags – including state, municipal, corporate, or otherwise – should also be lowered.

The mass shooting occurred during the Sunday church service in First Baptist Church in a small, rural town. A man with an assault rifle killed at least 26 people and wounded 20 more.

Malloy on Sunday released a statement calling for gun control measures by Congress in the wake of the deadly shooting.

“A church community in Texas gathered to pray in peace and now we pray for the deceased, the injured, and their friends and families," Malloy said in a statement. "Sutherland Springs now joins a club which no one wishes to join, a club made up of cities and towns ravaged by senseless gun violence—communities such as Littleton, Virginia Tech, Charleston, Orlando, Las Vegas, Newtown, and so many others. For the sake of all communities across the country, this madness of mass shootings needs to end once and for all.

"Congress needs to finally take up and pass commonsense gun control measures so that tragedies like this one never happen again. Connecticut will make any resources and expertise that we can provide available to those affected by this latest act of mass violence.”
