Club Collects for Concession Stand

Monica Vaughn and the Staples Gridiron Club will be collecting the last donations for a tag sale to benefit the construction of the Staples High School concession stand tomorrow. The building, planned to be a two-story structure, is shovel-ready.

"We have the drawing and the architectural rendering. We need the approvals and then we are ready to start digging," said Vaughn, a mother of one of the football players. The Zoning Board of Appeals has yet to issue a variance for the second floor, which would house athletic offices. If it does not, the design will have to be scaled back to a single story, with the removal of lockers to make room for offices.

Construction itself won't cost the taxpayers a dime according to supporters. An anonymous gift of $250,000 has been accepted for the project. That, along with the tag sale proceeds, will cover the cost.

For the tag sale, the club needs sporting equipment, coats, handbags, housewares, lawn and garden equipment and outdoor and household furniture. They will also take toys but are requesting no stuffed animals. The drop-off location is in the lot next to the high school's athletic center. Football players are available to pick up larger items. Donations will be accepted from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the high school. For $10, shoppers can start shopping an hour earlier. The rain date for the sale is Sunday. Some of the money raised will go to benefit WWPT Wreckers Radio as well.
