U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea in Hartford imposed the three-year prison sentence on Charles Young, along with three years of supervised release, for illegally possessing a firearm, U.S. Attorney for Connecticut Deirdre M. Daly said.
According to court documents and statements made in court, Young was arrested Feb. 25, 2015, after he had engaged police in a high-speed car chase that began in Bridgeport’s East End, continued on I-95 south and ended when Young crashed into a snowbank after exiting the highway in Fairfield.
During the chase, a witness saw Young throw something from his car near Exit 24 in Fairfield. A search of the area turned up a loaded Glock 22 .40-caliber firearm.
At the time of his arrest, Young was on state probation after his conviction in 2010 for criminal possession of a firearm and possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle.
On Oct. 9, 2015, Young was found to have violated his probation and was sentenced to five years in prison.
Young has been detained since his arrest. He pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon on Jan. 22.
Shea ordered Young’s federal sentence to run concurrently with his state sentence.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Connecticut State Police’s Statewide Urban Violence Cooperative Crime Control Task Force, Bridgeport Police Department and Fairfield Police Department.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Brian Leaming and David Nelson.
