Break-in Reported at Westport Coin Shop

UPDATED 2:30 p.m.: Would-be burglars smashed their way into a Westport coin store early Wednesday, but police said it appeared that nothing was stolen.

At about 2:56 a.m., police responded to Sam Sloat Coins at 606 Post Road E. after the alarm was activated. They found that the front door and a window had been smashed with two large rocks, Lt. John Pitoniak reported.

The store's owner reported that nothing appeared to have been stolen. Store surveillance footage showed that two males broke into the store, went inside for no more than 30 seconds and left in a dark-colored sedan similar to a late 1990s or early 2000s Ford Taurus.

Police described the first suspect as a black male wearing dark pants and a dark hooded sweatshirt with a baseball cap underneath. The second suspect was dressed in what resembled a dark-colored sweatsuit, the jacket of which had a light-colored stripe that wraps around it horizontally. He appeared to have a baseball cap on with a light-colored T-shirt wrapped around his head. Both suspects were wearing gloves.

Westport Police Detective Bureau is investigating the incident.
