STRATFORD, Conn. — It's been a long road to recovery — with five surgeries — for the bartender who was shot during an armed robbery at a bar in Stratford Center last month, according to his brother.

"Our dear friend and brother Regi is resting and recovering well," Sean Woodard said last week of his brother, Regi Woodard. "He’s building his strength after enduring five successful surgeries over the past two weeks."

Regi Woodard, 48, was shot in the abdomen on Nov. 14, while he was working at BAR at 2399 Main St. in downtown Stratford. An armed robber demanded cash, Woodward complied and the gunman shot him, police said.

He has been making strides in the weeks since the shooting, according to a post at a GoFundMe page.

"He’s beginning physical therapy with the staff at Bridgeport Hospital, who have been nothing short of amazing," said a update from his brother. "We will be remembering them and will be thankful for their efforts for many, many years to come."

For now, Woodward "needs rest and rehab. But rest assured, the day for a big celebration is in sight and we look forward to expressing our love and appreciation to all those who have prayed, donated money, delivered food and shared kind words," his brother said.

Two arrests have been made in the case.

Jachim Brown, a 30-year-old from Bridgeport, who police said was the gunman, has been charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree assault, first-degree threatening, criminal possession of a pistol/revolver, criminal possession of ammunition and carrying a firearm without a permit. He was held on $500,000 bond in the case.

Brown is also facing attempted murder charges for allegedly exchanging gunshots with an off-duty Bridgeport police officer and being involved in four armed robberies in Bridgeport, police said.

He was first taken into custody and arrested Nov. 15 after shooting at an off-duty officer during a violent armed robbery at EbLens in Bridgeport, police said. That was one day after the armed robbery and shooting at EbLens.

Eric Chambers, a 33-year-old of Bridgeport, who police said drove the getaway car, has been charged with first-degree robbery and held on $250,000 bond.

Since the GoFundMe page was launched, just over $15,000 has been raised for the $30,000 goal to help Woodward and his family cover medical and other expenses.
