Art Carries Westport Teen to Capitol

WESTPORT, Conn. – Westporter Gabriel Schindler, a recent Staples High School graduate, visited U.S. Rep. Jim Himes in Washington this week for the for the opening reception of the 2011 Arts Competition on Wednesday.

Schindler, 18, was named the Fourth District winner in this year's Congressional Art Competition . His oil/pastel painting, "Sunshine," is currently hanging in the U.S. Capitol, along with other winning entries from across the country.

"Congratulations to Gabriel for winning first place this year," said Himes, D-Greenwich, in a prepared statement. "The arts provide an unparalleled opportunity to develop creativity and expressive skills, and I urge all of these young artists to continue to pursue their artistic interests."

During his visit, Schindler, accompanied by Himes, toured the Capitol Building and the White House.
