EASTON-REDDING-WESTON, Conn. – It was a big year for winners as a Redding skater debuted in the Olympics and a Weston girl won a Daytime Emmy in 2014.

Redding figure skater Brooklee Han finished 20th while skating for Australia in the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. Han, who graduated from Joel Barlow High School in 2013, is now a freshman at Wesleyan University. She received 143.84 points in the Sochi games and said she hopes to compete in the 2018 games as well. She finished off the year with a strong showing in her Grand Prix debut at Skate America and by winning silver at the Australian National Figure Skating championships.

This was also a big year for 11-year-old Hayley Negrin of Weston . The Weston Middle School student was the youngest person nominated at the Daytime Emmy Awards for her performance in the animated series “Peg + Cat.” She won the Emmy for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program for her portrayal in the PBS show, beating out stars Alan Cumming and Ashley Tisdale.

In crime news, Corey Dawid of Easton was charged with attempted murder after police said he tried to strangle his wife in their Easton home. Police responded to the couple’s home after their son called 911 to report a fight between his parents. They discovered Dawid’s wife unconscious on the ground and arrested Dawid. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges .

It seemed as if the Redding Roadhouse would be closing its doors forever in May after the owners and the landlord were unable to come to an agreement on a lease. But after remaining closed for several months, the popular establishment announced it would be reopening under new management . The restaurant opened in November and is now run by Jordan Wright, nephew of original proprietor Mac Groetzinger.

After more than a decade of planning the Westport Weston Family Y celebrated the opening of its new facility this year. The 54,000-square-foot Bedford Family Center cost $38.5 million and includes a 10-lane, 25-yard lap pool and a 5,600 square-foot Wellness Center.

The Lunch Box in Weston was purchased by new owners in late April, who promptly shut it down for renovations. In July, Josh Tolk and his wife, Jessica, reopened the popular eatery, which has been a fixture in town for more than 37 years, with a whole new look and feel.
