WESTON, Conn. – It’s been a busy year for Weston, Easton and Redding, from new first selectmen to tragic deaths. Here are some of the top stories from 2013.

In November, voters in Easton and Redding elected new first selectmen after their former leaders decided not to run again.

Redding’s election was over quickly, with Julia Pemberton winning by a very small margin of only 52 votes. But in Easton, the results weren’t final for nearly a month. A recount was called after a write-in campaign for Val Buckley stalled the counts. Ultimately, Republican Adam Dunsby kept the original victory margin of only 35 votes .

Redding’s Brooklee Han will represent Australia in figure skating at the Winter Olympics in Sochi in February, after winning the Australian national championship in December and the Volvo Open in Latvia and finishing 12th in the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships in Osaka, Japan, in February.

In April, Weston High School and Easton and Redding’s Joel Barlow High School both ranked among the 10 best in Connecticut, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Friday the 13th was anything but unlucky for Laurie Dillon, a Weston resident who purchased a Mega Millions ticket on Dec. 13 and won $1 million . Dillon's "quick pick" ticket matched the first five numbers but missed the Mega Ball number that would have given her a piece of the jackpot of more than $636 million.

Construction of the new Westport-Weston Y continued on schedule. In June , workers were finishing the frame work and in December and they were putting up the concrete shell.

December saw the Joel Barlow football team make its very first state championships, but it lost to St. Joseph in the semifinals .

A 21-year-old New Milford man was arrested early in December in connection with the accident that killed Weston cyclist Thomas Steinert-Threlkeld in October, police said. Alexander Scott Lee faces charges of evading responsibility for a fatal accident, making an improper left turn and tampering with evidence, according to Bethel police. The accident occurred at Route 302 and Old Hawleyville Road in Bethel on Oct. 20.

Joseph "AJ" Cina, 12, was killed in a bike accident in late July. AJ, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from his bike and over a stone wall on Cedar Road in Wilton. He had just finished his last season in the Weston Little League as a member of the District 11/12 summer team.

The Aspetuck Wildcats Division 13 team won the New England championship in the American Youth Football and Cheer competition early this December in Hartford and will compete in the national championships in Florida.
