WESTPORT, Conn. – High school students are not often found at kindergarten birthday parties. But on Saturday, four members of the Staples High School varsity football team helped Westport Wreckers fan Nathan Smith celebrate his sixth birthday.

The team members, Staples seniors Nick Kelly, Joey Zelkowitz, Jared Levi and Will Patrick, volunteered to play football with Nathan and his friends, sign autographs and quiz the children on Wrecker trivia.

“As a new Board of Education member, I thought this would be a great way to connect our Staples High School football players to some of the youngsters that look up to them, as they aspire to be a future Wrecker one day,” said Nathan’s mom, Jeannie Smith, who was appointed to the education board in December.
