The award is given each year to civic leaders who have provided their time and talent to the betterment of the community.

Wolgast has been a resident of Westport for 50 years. He is chairman of the Family Y's board of trustees and has also served in leadership roles with the Westport Republican Town Committee and the Westport Sunrise Rotary.

“Not only has Pete been a long-term dedicated lay leader at Christ & Holy Trinity Church, but he’s served many years as a member of the Westport Representative Town Meeting, four years as president of the Westport Historical Society, two terms as Chair of the Westport Weston Family Y’s Board of Trustees, and – well, the list goes on and on,” Allen Raymond, last year's Silver Star recipient said in a statement.

State and local officials took advantage of the occasion to present Wolgast with honors of their own. Westport First Selectman Jim Marpe presented him with an official proclamation from the Town, and state Rep. Gail Lavielle and state Sen. Toni Boucher presented Wolgast with an Official Citation of congratulations, on behalf of their colleagues, state Sen. John McKinney and state Rep. Jonathan Steinberg.

“I consider Pete a real mentor in every sense of the word." Marpe said in a statement. “Which makes me particularly proud that this Proclamation to Pete is the first of my administration.”
