Westporters Toast Taste of the Town

By all accounts, last night’s seventh annual A Taste of Westport was a gastronomic success. Earthplace , the “Taste” venue, was packed with eager diners ready to sample the wares of the town’s most celebrated chefs. It was an evening of tasty fundraising with profits going to benefit CLASP Homes , Westport’s non-profit whose mission it is to to provide homes and opportunities for people with mental retardation and related disabilities.

“This is a wonderful show of support from the community,” said Robin Hammond, Development Director for CLASP. “An event like this really goes a long way to fill in our funding gaps. So this is a big deal for us, and for the people we serve.”

It seemed to be a big deal for those who made the convivial scene. Westporters mingled with local celebrity chefs serving some of their favorite dishes.

“Pietro and Janine are friends,” Westport’s Nancy Lewis said of Pietro and Janine Scotti, proprietors of Da Pietro’s . “So you can’t miss their table. But if I had to mention another favorite, I’d have to say LeFarm

Fortunately for those eager to try both of Nancy’s recommendations, LeFarm’s table was adjacent to Da Pietro’s. Chef Pietro Scotti was serving a vegan mushroom bisque and a vegan risotto primavera. “An event like this is near and dear to us,” said Janine. “Westport is where we live and work so it is so important for us to be here with our neighbors, supporting our community.”

Chef Bill Taibe of LeFarm was plating whipped chicken livers on toast almost as fast as guests were eating them. And his local asparagus served with black quinoa was another crowd pleaser. “Food is fast becoming a political thing,” said Bill, famous for his farm to table philosophy. “An event like this is fun, and it’s a great opportunity to get people talking about what we eat.”

Other participating restaurants included Bobby Q’s , Tavern on Main , Rizzuto’s , River House , Café Manolo , The Brasserie, Matsu Sushi , Bombay Club , Blue Lemon and Tarantino .
