WESTPORT, Conn. This Fourth of July, Westport resident Jennifer McCarthy said she and her family are keeping their plans simple.
"We're stopping by friends' houses in town for picnics and a pool parties," she said Friday night as she and her sons Michael, 7, and Daniel, 3, sat on Compo Beach waiting for the annual Westport Police Athletic League fireworks display to begin.
Although Jennifer said the family is looking forward to spending the day with friends Monday, she said watching the fireworks at Compo is "definitely our favorite part" of the Fourth of July.
Westport resident Michelle Brunaige said her family is traveling out of state for the holiday. Their destination: Plymouth, Mass.
Also traveling outside of Westport this weekend is resident Jim Morgan and his family. Jim said he, his wife Sarah and their son Alex, 10, are hitting the road for Newport, R.I. their annual Fourth of July getaway.
"My brother lives right on the beach so his house is the official Fourth of July gathering place. Not just for us, but the whole family," Jim said. "My sister and her family, my parents we all spend the weekend in Newport with my brother. It's always a blast."
