Westporter Helps Organize Longshore Golf Benefit

WESTPORT, Conn. – Every time Westport resident Skip Lane goes golfing at Longshore Club Park, he's reminded of how much he hates looking at the run-down food trailer that serves as a concession stand. That's why he volunteered to organize a benefit tournament and gala to help raise funds for a new one.

"This (trailer) irks me," said Lane, a lifelong resident who grew up playing at Longshore. "Longshore is a beautiful town asset. It's embarrassing, as a Westporter, to see this carnival trailer here."

The trailer has been the concession stand near the ninth green since a majority of the original halfway house burned down in 2003. Since then, the 9th & ½ Hole Committee has set its sights on building a new halfway house .

This spring, the committee launched a fundraising campaign for a new halfway house, which is estimated to cost $225,000. The committee, according to the Friends of Westport Parks & Recreation website , has raised $135,226 to date.

To help boost the fundraising effort, Lane organized the first annual Golf Benefit & Golf Ball Gala, with help from the Longshore Men's Golf Association.

The event, to be held at Longshore, will feature an 18-hole shotgun golf tournament beginning at 1 p.m. and a gala beginning at 6 p.m.

Participants in the tournament will play for a variety of prizes, including trophies, golf bags, shirts and clubs. New Range Rovers, courtesy of sponsor Range Rover of Milford, will also be up for grabs, Lane said.

The gala, which will take place at the Longshore tennis pavilion, will feature food and drinks from local restaurants like Splash, Dunville's and River House, live and silent auctions, a live band and DJ.

"We've got all the makings for a fun day and night," said Lane, adding that the event will take place rain or shine.

The cost to attend the entire benefit is $200 per golfer. The cost to attend only the gala is $50. For more information or to reserve a spot in the tournament or gala, send an email to .
