WESTPORT, Conn. -- The Westport Weston Family Y Water Rat Swim Team helped raise more than $41,000 to help the people in the Philippines.

The five-hour "Swim for the Philippines" on Nov. 27 helped benefit the Typhoon Haiyan relief fund at Save the Children. More than 150 Water Rat members took part in the effort.

The top fundraisers included Justin Krakoff with $3,784; Annie Bowens, $3,530; Max Wimer, $3,175; Emmet Adams, $2,155; and Ethan Gross, $2,154.

The most laps completed by any individual was 232 by Jonathan Blansfield, followed by Daniel Williams, who swam 228 laps. Cambell Rosow led the younger swimmers, completing 70 laps in 30 minutes.

"Justin Krakoff, his mother Lisa, Max Wimer and I thank all the Water Rats who participated in the Swim for the Philippines and the families and friends who supported them so generously," said Ronald Wimer, a Water Rat parent.

"Water Rat coaches strive to teach our swimmers the value of hard work, persistence and sacrifice - both in and out of the water. The funds raised will soon help relief experts move desperately needed supplies into hard hit communities and help them provide the services that children and their families need to recover from this tragedy."

For Water Rat parents, the fundraising effort, held the day before Thanksgiving, gave special meaning to the holiday. Laura Ballou said she was proud of her son, Tucker, who raised more than $500.

"Tucker really got into the cause and made a convincing pitch to friends and relatives," she said. "We are very proud of him."
