Residents with a serious case of winter blues are looking to travel agents like Cliff Morgan of Travel Exchange in Westport for a cure that includes white sand beaches, sunny skies and warm weather.
Over the past few weeks, Morgan, the agencys manager of leisure services, said hes been flooded with calls from people looking to escape the snow .
Get me out of here. I need to be warm is generally what Ive been hearing from people, said Morgan. Weve also heard from vendors from hotels we work with in the Caribbean that business in the last couple weeks has been fantastic.
According to Morgan, the agency has seen more business than it did this time last year. And while he credits a strengthening economy, he gives a lot of credit to Mother Nature and the seemingly endless amount of snow thats fallen this month.
Ive worked in this industry for 25 years. Not in my life, in my career, have I experienced a winter like this, he said.
So where exactly are people escaping to? Anguilla, St. Barts and Barbados are currently three of the most popular destinations, Morgan said.
Over at Warren Travel in Westport, owner Carol Warren told a similar story. Since the New Year, she said shes seen a boost in businesses, especially for spur-of-the-moment tropical getaways.
"The weather has definitely been a motivator, she said. Right now, people are looking at all this snow and they just want to go somewhere warm and lay on the beach.
Like clients at Travel Exchange, Warren said islands in the southern Caribbean are popular destinations right now. Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic has been especially popular so far, she added.
