WESTPORT, Conn. Westport student and artist Harrison Smith, a seventh-grader at Bedford Middle School, will have his work printed on hundreds of T-shirts that will be handed out at the upcoming Westport Young Womans League 34th annual Minute Man Race.
Harrison, 12, was crowned the winner of this years race T-shirt design contest. The competition, open to children from age 8 to 12, was judged by Westport graphic artist Miggs Burroughs.
Over the years, Ive seen many entries that show runners, either singly or in groups, which is the natural thing for a child to draw, Burroughs said. Harrisons entry, taken from the perspective of an individual runner, is very original. It shows a runners foot crossing the finish line, and even has the words Minute Man Race printed on the runners shoelaces.
Harrison, whose interests include art, music, and sports, will also receive a $50 gift certificate to Maxs Art Supply in Westport.
The 5K/10K race is set for April 29 at Compo Beach. Registration is open online through April 26. Runners also can register in person at The Edge, 542 Westport Ave., Norwalk, the day before the race from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
