WESTPORT, Conn. — A total of 3,000 yellow rubber ducks will be dumped in the Saugatuck River during the Westport Sunrise Rotary’s fifth annual Great Duck Race on June 22.

During the family-friendly event, which raises funds for nearly 20 local charities, participants can by a duck to race in the main event for $20.

“While the Great Duck Race is all in fun, the serious business of providing much needed services and donations to worthy charities is its priority,” event chairman Steve Violette said in a statement. “By purchasing a duck for $20, you help support long-standing local charities.

The race will begin at 3 p.m. as the ducks, each assigned a number corresponding to a ticket, are launched into the water. Ticket holders of the first 10 ducks to cross the finish line will win prizes. The first-place prize is a $5,000 Visa gift card; the second-place prize is a $1,000 gift card; and third through tenth-place winners will receive a $500 gift card. Ticket holders do not have to be present to win.

Proceeds from the event will help support nonprofits, including Elder House, Homes With Hope, Meals on Wheels, Mercy Learning Center, Project Return, Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities, Big Brothers/Sisters of Southwestern Connecticut, and more.

Although the race doesn’t start until 3 p.m., the day’s festivities begin at 11 a.m. in Parker Harding Plaza and will include children’s arts and crafts, games, face painting, magicians, a duck decorating contest, music, and food and drinks.

Duck tickets can be purchased at Fairfield County Bank, 20 Compo Road S.; TD Bank,185 Main St.; the Russell Agency, 317 Pequot Ave., Southport; or from any Westport Sunrise Rotary member.
