WESTPORT, Conn. -- The Westport Police Athletic League presented its annual Ellis Family and Melissa & Doug Bernstein college scholarships at Westport Police Headquarters.
The recipients of the scholarships are: Emma Mikesh, Samantha Schwartz, Kristen Godin, Kady Chappa, Kelsey Bobrow, Madison Kashetta, Kyle Mikesh, Alex Frawley, Ned Batlin, Tucker Bobrow, Taylor Hawes, Shannon Connors, Ben Call, Kyle Frawley, Nick Kelly, Colleen McCarthy and Logan Rice.
Westport PAL is one of the town's oldest youth organizations. Established in 1949, the Westport PAL continues to blaze a trail with many outstanding youth athletic programs, academic scholarships and its support of the Westport community.
Westport PAL is a nonprofit organization run by both active and retired police officers and volunteers from the community. At the core of the organization is its volunteers and its partnership with the town.
PAL activities include funding and producing the annual Fourth of July Fireworks, the Ice Rink at Longshore, Police Chief Sam Luciano Golf Tournament, Children's Holiday Party, academic and sports scholarships and the numerous youth athletic programs, which include football, flag football, cheerleading, boys and girls basketball, wrestling, boys and girls lacrosse, and boys and girls track & field.
Today, 1,900 children participate in Westport PAL's sports programs. it annually awards more than 25 academic scholarships.
