Westport Look: Getting Ready for Irene

WESTPORT, Conn. – Westport boaters Mark Gray and Doug Johnston hauled their Capri 22 sailboats out of the E.R. Strait Marina at Longshore Club Park on Friday evening to be on the safe side before Hurricane Irene hit.

Gray, Johnston and many other boaters decided to err on the side of caution. But others, including Joe Tarqueno, who docks at the Ned Dimes Marina at Compo Beach, decided to leave their boats in the water.

"We're surrounded by high land all around here, so we're well protected from high waves," said Tarqueno. Because he decided to leave his boat in the marina, Tarqueno made sure to check all his lines and added a few more.

Boaters weren't the only ones gearing up for the storm. Several homes along the water have been boarded up with plywood. The pavilion at Longshore also has boards up on its back windows. The pavilion on Compo Beach, although free of windows and doors, has plywood blocking each of its doorways to try to keep out the water.
