WESTPORT, Conn. -- The Westport Library has three new offerings as part of WestportREADS 2016 this January.

The WestportREADS selection this year is "Miracle at St. Anna" by James McBride. This is a story about courage and redemption set in an Italian village during World War II.

On Monday, Jan. 11 from 4 to 5 p.m. kids can make a “Victory Garden-in-a-Jar” to take home. During World Wars I and II, Americans grew "victory gardens" on their properties and in public spaces to avoid food shortages. At one point, there were over 20 million victory gardens in the United States. Participants should bring a wide-mouthed glass jar with a metal lid; the library will supply potting soil and seeds. Email Mary Parmelee for more information.

There will be a discussion of "Jump into the Sky" by Shelley Pearsall on Monday, Jan. 11 from 6-6:45 p.m. in the Children’s Department for kids grades 6 through 9. This book features 13-year-old Levi in 1945, who's sent to find his father, who is serving with an elite all-black paratrooper unit. For more information, email Kris Nash.

Kids in grades 5 through 7 can create a Walter Wick-inspired "I Spy" book, with a WestportREADS theme of Italian art on Friday, Jan. 15 from 1 to 4 p.m. Participants should bring a smartphone or tablet with a camera. Email Deborah White with questions.

WestportREADS is dedicated to strengthening the community through the shared experience of a book. The program is funded by the estate of Jerry A. Tishman and has been sponsored annually by the library since 2001.

The Westport Library is at 20 Jesup Rd., in Westport.

For further information, call 203-291-4800 or check the library's website, or email Mary Parmelee.
