To the Editor:
As a Progressive Democrat, I have never endorsed a Republican candidate for public office until now.
However, Westport/Weston Probate Judge candidate Lisa Wexler, host of the award winning radio talk show: The Lisa Wexler Show, is not your everyday GOP candidate. In fact, we have not seen this type of Liberal Republican since the days of Teddy Roosevelt.
A graduate of NYU Law School, where she won the American Jurisprudence Award for excellence in Constitutional Law, Lisa is a champion of environmentalists and conservationists and has fought against unscrupulous opportunists who take advantage of seniors by helping themselves to property that is not their own.
Lisa and I worked successfully together with Save Westport Now to stop a local developer from destroying downtown Westport by amending zoning regulations and overturning RTM rulings that would have extended the height and density of downtown buildings and torn down historic structures, among other detrimental projects disguised as “downtown revitalization.”
A former member of Westport P&Z, Lisa is familiar with the inner workings of town management and is a very active advisory board member of Jane Doe -- founded to erase the stigma of sexual assault victims and educate law enforcement on those issues.
Fighting for the rights of women both on and off air, Lisa won the prestigious Gracie Award for her radio interview with Gloria Steinem and went on to become a judge for those awards.
An advocate for the powerless, voiceless and disabled in our society, Lisa lobbied for newborn screening for SKID (Newborn Screening for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency) educating legislators and urging them to fund a program that for just four dollars per infant would enable care for an otherwise fatal disease.
Lisa and I also worked together to bring to light the plight of Westport native Kathryn Sorentino, who was unjustly imprisoned in solitary confinement at a maximum security prison for non-payment of mortgage on her home after her ex-husband refused to make alimony/child support payments.
Conversely, Lisa’s opponent is a billboard advertised divorce attorney who rarely if ever set foot in Westport Probate Court until nominated, and has done foreclosure work on homes in Fairfield County.
The role of Probate Judge is a crucial part of our system of protections-- one meant to ensure that appointed conservators take proper care of the health and welfare of wards. And with the Affordable Care Act going into effect next year, our Probate Judge will be charged with the important task of making certain that all benefits run smoothly so that the least among us will receive all they are entitled to under law.
Lisa Wexler is not your typical candidate and will not be our typical Probate Judge. People have a choice this November and should choose Lisa.
