Westport Fireworks Spectacle Delights All Ages

WESTPORT, Conn. – Watching fireworks explode over Westport’s Compo Beach might have been the main attraction Tuesday night, but for many gathered on the beach, the show itself was only half the fun.

“It’s the whole experience,” Westport resident Christine Cua said after buying her daughter Megan and friend Laine ice cream. “I enjoy hanging out with friends, relaxing and not having anything else to do.”

Having seen the fireworks from the beach at least four times in the past, Cua knew to arrive early. She and her family arrived at the beach at 3:45 p.m. and met up with friends.

A few hundred feet up the sand, Westport resident Christina Kaufmann, her 10-year-old son Joey, boyfriend Jose, and friend Tanya with sons AJ and Robert, enjoyed a pre-fireworks event of their own.

Like many others, the group brought their own food and a variety of toys, including silly string and several glow-in-the-dark items. They also brought sparklers and small fireworks, which they lit before the big show.

“We usually load up on the toys for the kids before we get here,” said Kaufmann. “Seeing their faces light up as we hand them out, it’s priceless. It’s all about the kids.”

This was the 56th year for event, organized by the Westport Police Athletic League. This year's show was sponsored by Melissa & Doug, a Wilton-based toy company owned by Westporters Melissa and Doug Bernstein.
