WESTPORT, Conn. Westport firefighters are hoping to spread some holiday cheer to soldiers in combat zones but they need all the help they can get.
For the past several years, the department has been a drop-off site for Give2TheTroops , a nonprofit that sends care packages to troops in harm's way. The packages are made up of donated items most requested by service personnel.
"With the holiday season upon us, we would like you to remember the men and women in uniform that are still deployed overseas," said firefighters Pete Nichio and Earl Hill, who coordinate the department's Give2TheTroops effort. "This time of year can be especially hard for deployed service members. The care packages and gifts that they receive are a great morale booster."
The list of requested items ranges from food and drinks like beef jerky, coffee and powdered drink mixes to toiletries, DVDs, video games, linens, T-shirts, cards and letters and even items for dogs. A full list of requested/acceptable donation items is available on the Give2TheTroops website .
Monetary donations are also needed to help pay shipping costs. To ensure that the troops receive the packages in time for the holidays, Nichio and Hill said donations must be received no later than Nov. 30.
They can be dropped off at fire headquarters at 515 Post Road E.
