WESTPORT, Conn. – A stray cat and her five newborn kittens have a temporary home thanks to the warmheartedness of Westport’s Claudia Tergis and her family.

Last Sunday, the Tergis’ were visited by the stray, whom they’re calling Mitzi.

“She was sitting in our driveway crying and completely drenched from the heavy rains,” Tergis wrote in an email. “We did not have the heart to turn her away.”

Within minutes of being taken inside, Mitzi started having contractions and delivered her first kitten, Tergis said. The second kitten soon followed. The rest of the kittens were delivered with assistance from the family.

“We had to help her deliver the babies by breaking the bag and wiping away the mucus so they could take their first breath,” Tergis said in her email. “It was an amazing and very moving experience.”

She said she hopes to find loving homes for Mitzi and the kittens. Until then, they will be staying with the Tergis family.

Anyone interested in adopting Mitzi and her babies can call 203-222-8877 or email Tergis at cptergis@sbcglobal.net
