Westport Duck Race Ready to Splash Into Action

WESTPORT, Conn. – They can’t quack and they can’t swim, but 3,000 yellow rubber ducks will dive into Westport’s Saugatuck River to help raise money for local and international charities during the fourth annual Great Duck Race June 30.

Organized by the Westport Sunrise Rotary Club, the event serves as a fundraiser for 40 Westport, Norwalk and Bridgeport charities, as well as international aid efforts, said Steve Violette, event chairman.

“While the Great Duck Race is all in fun, the serious business of providing much needed services and donations to worthy charities is its priority,” Violette said.

Each of the rubber ducks has a number which corresponds to a sponsor ticket, which race-goers can purchase for $20 each. The first 10 ducks to cross the finish line win. The ticket holders for those ducks must be present to win their prize.

The first-place prize is a $5,000 Visa gift card and the second-place prize is a $1,000 Visa gift card. Third- through tenth-place winners each receive a $500 Visa gift card.

In addition to the race, the event features a variety of child-friendly activities, including arts and crafts, face painting, a magician, a bounce castle and a duck decorating contest. There also will be music and refreshments.

The Great Duck Race will be from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Parker-Harding Plaza. Duck sponsor tickets can be purchased at Fairfield County Bank, 20 Compo Road South; TD Bank, 185 Main St.; Black Duck Café, 605 Riverside Ave.; The Russell Agency, 317 Pequot Ave., Southport; or from any Westport Sunrise Rotary member.
