WESTPORT, Conn. – A group of 600 people is set to go caroling through Westport’s Compo Beach area Wednesday night in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the largest group of singers caroling door to door.
Dubbed the “One Voice” event, the world-record attempt is organized by the Unitarian Church of Westport.
"It's going to be spectacular," One Voice lead organizer Jim Keenan said. "We're going to be out there, spreading good cheer and making people smile. That can't be beat."
More than an attempt at setting a world record, the event is also a fundraiser for the Lily Sarah Grace Fund, a nonprofit that supports arts programs in underfunded elementary schools. The fund was created in memory Lily, Sarah and Grace Badger, the three sisters who died in last year’s Christmas Day house fire in Stamford.
“The Lily Sarah Grace Fund is just a great nonprofit to raise money for,” said Keenan. “And it seemed like a perfect tie-in, as we’ll be singing and dancing, and it's a fund that support the arts."
During the event, Keenan said the group will travel a five-street route and will sing at 14 predetermined houses. A festive red Fiat, provided by Fiat of Fairfield County, will lead the way, he added.
Representatives from Guinness will be present. As the event has reached its maximum of 600 participants, no more carolers can be accepted. This includes walk-ups, Keenan said.
“We’ve actually had to turn people away,” Keenan said. “Because it could jeopardize the record-setting attempt, we’re asking that people don’t come down and try to join the group.”
However, anyone who would like support the cause can make a donation to the Lily Sarah Grace fund online , Keenan said.
