Westport Chef Whips Up Themed Parties

Westport resident Cindy Hartog knows how to get things cooking at birthday parties. This classically trained actress, teacher and chef, along with her daughter Danielle, specializes in hosting cooking themed birthday parties for kids of all ages.

"We offer a lot of different themes. We have an Italian theme where kids can make pasta from scratch. We have a Japanese theme where the kids can make things like sushi and dumplings," Cindy says. "There's a Mexican party theme where kids can make tortillas, tacos and quesadillas. And for those kids who just want desserts, I usually recommend chocolate truffles and chocolate lava cakes."

About six years ago, Cindy was able to bring all three of her skill sets into play when she started Cindy's Sous Chefs. And because she's more than a chef, these parties go well beyond cooking.

"Depending on the age [of the children], we do a mock TV cooking show where the birthday child is the star of the show," Cindy says. "And we get the audience involved, too. The kids have a blast and really get into it."

For younger kids, usually between 3 and 7, Cindy recommends the tea party theme where children make English scones and chocolate-covered strawberries and decorate pre-made sugar cookies shaped like tea pots.

During this party, Cindy takes the kids back to Victorian England. She even comes wearing a Victorian era dress and serving up her best English accent.

Fairfield County resident Tracy Dayton says the extra touches made her daughter Jade's 6th and 7th birthday parties memorable.

"The first year, we had the tea party, which was absolutely adorable. And then last year we did the Italian theme with a cooking show where Cindy was the host and my daughter was the famous guest chef," Tracy says. "Both parties were absolutely different, but both times my daughter was definitely made to feel like the center attention. It was very clear to her that it was her special day."
