STAMFORD, Conn. ? Best-selling Westport author Jane Green revealed one of her secrets of success Thursday at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s StarWrite Author’s Luncheon and fundraiser in Stamford.

The U.K.-born and -educated author told her audience of about 100 they should carve out time each day just for themselves. Green said it doesn’t need to be a long period of time, just a “period of peace” to find balance.

Green understand the need for peace. In addition to writing 16 novels, she runs her household, which includes her husband, six children and plenty of pets. But she wasn’t complaining. The writer said her career was “the best job in the world,” though it certainly keeps her busy.

“Honestly, I don’t know how I do it all,” Green said.  In addition to her advice, she shared several personal stories that became the inspirations for some of her novels.

Another highlight of the luncheon came when 14-year-old Jillian Duffy, recently named Miss Forestville’s Outstanding Teen 2013, spoke about her two-year battle with lymphoma. Jillian, of Forestville, Conn., has been receiving chemotherapy, has lost her hair twice, and at one point dropped 25 pounds. But she has kept a positive outlook because of the caring doctors and nurses she has met, has continued to dance, and knows that if she sets her mind on a goal, she will achieve it.

The annual luncheon at the Hilton Stamford Hotel included a raffle and silent auction.

It ended with Green auctioning off an advance copy of her new novel, “Family Pictures,” which is expected to hit stores in March. Proceeds from the book sales go to the organization's patient support programs.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society announced that next year’s speaker will be Mike Greenberg .
