After following the signs, Green realized that the sign maker may have been driving one last time down the streets where they grew up, reflecting on their past.
"It made me tear up, and it made me extraordinarily proud to live in a town that produces a family that exhibits this kind of kindness, and care, and love," wrote Green.
"I needed to see those signs today. I needed to be reminded of the goodness of people, of the beauty in the world, of how kindness will be repaid, 3,000 over."
Green was on the right track. It turns out that the signs were posted as a tribute to the Davises, who are moving to Florida after 50 years in Westport. Their adult children posted the signs and drove them past as they left town.
Green is the New York Times bestselling author of "Summer Secrets," her 17th novel.
