Westport Arts Center Announces Summer Camp Programs

WESTPORT, Conn. -- The Westport Arts Center has announced its summer 2014 camp lineup.

"With 10 camps in the mornings and afternoons for ages 4 to 12 there will be something for everyone this summer at WAC," representatives said. "From June to August, children can get creative in camps that will have them exploring new materials, techniques, and styles."

Summer camps will be lead by Education Managers Lindsay Heffernan and Sarah Kelly.

"Summer camp is always an exciting season at the Arts Center," said Kelly. "It's wonderful to see the students so enthusiastic about learning new art techniques, experimenting with fun materials, making friends, and creating great memories in the education studio."

  • Jump stART: Explore your imagination and learn about new art materials in this mixed-media art camp. Create collages, paint, and sculpt to find new ways to discover art techniques that emphasize process and not product. This camp is designed specifically to encourage artistic growth and enhance fine motor skills. This is a drop-off class, and children must be toilet trained to participate. Monday - Friday, June 16 – 20, 9:30 – 10:45, Ages 4 – 5, $150/$130 WAC members
  • Wild about Animals: Learn about drawing, painting, 3-D construction, and sculpture, all based around a wild animal theme with all new projects.Create artwork inspired by exciting techniques, a wide range of materials, and of course, creatures of all shapes and sizes. Monday - Friday, June 23 - 27, 9:30 – 12:30 (Ages 6-10), 2:00 – 4:00 (Ages 8 – 12), Morning: $295/$270 for WAC members, Afternoon: $195/$180 for WAC members
  • American Art: In this 4-day camp, discover popular art from all over America, in honor of Independence Day. Motivated by American artists, participants will design creations using dynamic art materials.  Monday - Thursday, June 30 – July 3 , 9:30 – 12:30 (Ages 6-10), 2:00 – 4:00 (Ages 8 – 12), Morning: $235/$220 for WAC members, Afternoon: $155/$145 for WAC members
  • Art All over the World: Take a trip inside the studio to learn about cultures and traditions, including Venetian mask-making, Japanese fans, African Serengeti paintings, and much, much more. Monday - Friday, July 7 - 11, 9:30 – 12:30 (Ages 6-10), 2:00 – 4:00 (Ages 8 – 12), Morning: $295/$270 for WAC members, Afternoon: $195/$180 for WAC members
  • Everything 3-D: A new camp for students who love everything that’s not flat. Learn to build, sculpt, and construct from a variety of dynamic art materials. Air-dry clay, plaster gauze, cardboard, and everyday household items will be used to create artwork that can be viewed from all angles. Monday - Friday, July 14 - 18, 9:30 – 12:30 (Ages 6-10), 2:00 – 4:00 (Ages 8 – 12), Morning: $295/$270 for WAC members, Afternoon: $195/$180 for WAC members.
  • Beach Bum: Design, paint, build, and collage everything from sunglasses to beach towels, and use materials such as shells, sand, and more to create these vibrant projects from the seashore. Monday - Friday, July 21 - 25, 9:30 – 12:30 (Ages 6-10), 2:00 – 4:00 (Ages 8 – 12), Morning: $295/$270 for WAC members, Afternoon: $195/$180 for WAC members.
  • Toy Inventors & Creators: Explore everything about toys, from old fashioned to brand-new, and all about the artists that create them. Sketch, design, build, and construct your way through this imaginative camp with all new projects, using problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Monday - Friday, July 28 – August 1, 9:30 – 12:30 (Ages 6-10), 2:00 – 4:00 (Ages 8 – 12), Morning: $295/$270 for WAC m   embers, Afternoon: $195/$180 for WAC members
  • LEGO camp: Learn basic LEGO building techniques to stimulate your imagination and creativity using the LEGO brick. Explore a wide range of artists and architects, and work individually as well as in teams to build everything from metropolitan cities and futuristic cars. Images of the students work will be take each day and transferred to a CD to share with family, friends, and other LEGO-lovers. Monday - Friday, August 4 - 8, 9:30 – 12:30 (Ages 6-10), 2:00 – 4:00 (Ages 8 – 12), Morning: $295/$270 for WAC members, Afternoon: $195/$180 for WAC members
  • Experimental Materials: Create amazing works of art using supplies ranging from duct tape, cut Styrofoam plates, tin foil, and found objects, to stimulate your imagination and expand your creativity. Monday - Friday, August 11 - 15, 9:30 – 12:30 (Ages 6-10), 2:00 – 4:00 (Ages 8 – 12), Morning: $295/$270 for WAC members, Afternoon: $195/$180 for WAC members
  • FUNdamentals and Foundations: This camp, with all new dynamic lessons, is designed to strengthen artistic skills through engaging in a range of projects. Students will investigate the basics and fundamentals of art and discover a variety of new techniques to learn how to paint, draw, collage, and print with a variety of media. Monday - Friday, August 18 - 22, 9:30 – 12:30 (Ages 6-10), 2:00 – 4:00 (Ages 8 – 12), Morning: $295/$270 for WAC members, Afternoon: $195/$180 for WAC members
