Katherine Grace Marra is on a mission to bring a teenager's voice to the often elitist world of film criticism.
"Several months ago, said the Weston High School sophomore, I was looking up critics' reviews for a movie and I realized that many adult critics' opinions of movies are very different from my friends' and my opinions."
She decided to shake up the status quo with a blog. "Many critics had very negative reviews of Burlesque, she said. "They said the story has been done a million times and it wasn't new or exciting. Well, all my friends and I disagree. We loved that movie. ... Because we're younger, we haven't seen that kind of story in many films. That was when I decided to start a blog where I would write movie reviews from a teenager's perspective."
Her father, Raymond, contacted local film critic Susan Granger, who has helped Marra find her voice. "She gave me some tips on what to look for in films and what to write about in reviews," she said.
Later, a family friend contacted a manager at Sony pictures who gave Marra the opportunity to attend advance screenings of all Sony releases in New York.
She has also appeared as an extra in two productions Tower Heist starring Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy and Alan Alda, and We the Peeples, a Tyler Perry film starring David Alan Grier.
When she's not embedded in the film world, Marra skis on the Weston ski team. Every other weekend, her family travels to Vermont, where she hones her skills on the slopes. She also enjoys photography, singing, dancing and fashion.
To date, Marra has written 10 reviews, and she doesn't intend to stop any time soon. "There are plenty more to come," she said.
