WESTPORT, Conn. Earthplace, Westports nature discovery center, will conduct water quality research in the Sherwood Island Mill Pond watershed thanks to a grant from Connecticut Light & Power.
This grant is the fourth contribution CL&P has made to the Harbor Watch Program at Earthplace. The research will monitor the following levels of the pond: dissolved oxygen, salinity, temperature, fecal coliform bacteria and nutrients, including total nitrogen and total phosphorus.
The research will consist of eight shoreline and three deep-water monitoring sites that will be tested once a week by trained high school and college students. The purpose is to demonstrate what needs to be done to mitigate pollution problems at the pond.
This specific research has a companion endeavor on all four tributaries discharging to Sherwood Island Mill Pond funded by other programs directed by Harbor Watch. A watershed wide-water quality report will be issued in October and shared with seven partners and stakeholders, including local governments in the watershed and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
