Today at Saugatuck Congregational Church, firefighters raised an American flag over the church's entrance. The day was a "test run," said organizer Mary Ann West, for next week's placing of 5,500 small flags on the church's lawn. June 18 is Field of Flags, which brings families, veterans and friends to the church for the flag placing and as "a silent, patriotic and poignant reminder of the cost of war," says Mary Ann. Each flag represents a casualty, as well as the family members and friends who experience the loss.In addition to the flag placings, a tribute, dedication and an interfaith service in the church sanctuary are planned for June 18.
