Thomas Long Sr., 81, Westport CPA and Attorney

WESTPORT, Conn. – Thomas R. Long Sr., a 50-year resident of Westport, died April 19 in Norwalk Hospital of heart failure. He was 81.

Long was a retired senior vice president and general counsel of Westvaco Corporation.

The son of Roy and Charlena Clough Long, he was born Dec. 22, 1930 in Albany, Vt. Raised on the family farm in Albany, Long was educated in a single-room schoolhouse with no running water or electricity. He graduated high school with honors and served a year in the US Navy.

Long married Elaine Miles in 1949. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1953 and from Yale University Law School in 1956. He held a certified public accountant certificate in Illinois and worked for the Northern Trust and Pullman Standard Companies in Chicago, Ill. after graduating from Yale.

He started working at Westvaco in 1962, joining the tax section of the comptroller's department. He was appointed corporate tax manager in 1964 and elected assistant comptroller in 1969. Long became associate general counsel in 1973, when he was also elected assistant secretary of the company. He became general counsel in 1977 and was elected vice president in July 1980 before being elected senior vice president in 1986.

Long was admitted to practice law in Illinois, New York and various federal courts. After retirement, he was also admitted to the Connecticut Bar. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and the American Law Institute.

He also served on the boards of arbitration in New York and Connecticut, as well as an arbitrator for many years. He was a voracious reader, amateur photographer, boater, woodworker and antique collector.

Long traveled with his wife to all 50 states and all continents, except Antarctica, which he was planning to travel to this year. Either through a camera lens, with his hands on tools, or just listening, Long found beauty in nature, landscapes, music, gardens, flowers, sunsets and his family.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine; three sons, Edward Long, Thomas Long Jr. and Dana Long; three daughters-in-law, Andree, Melinda and Jacqueline; and four granddaughters.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday at Spear-Miller Funeral Home in Fairfield. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Greens Farms Congregational Church in Westport. Burial will be private.
