WESTPORT, Conn. — The Tony Award-winning musical “Bye Bye Birdie” will come to life on stage in Westport during the Staples Players Summer Theatre production of this Broadway classic.
Starring high school and college students from Westport, Weston, Fairfield and Trumbull, the show revolves around famous singer Conrad Birdie and his visit to the fictional town of Sweet Apple, Ohio.
“I play Conrad Birdie, a character much like Elvis at the height of popularity, who has just been drafted into the Army,” said Weston’s Jack Seigenthaler. “Conrad’s goodbye to his country — conceived by his manager, Albert Peterson — is to bestow ‘One Last Kiss’ onto a random fan in this small Ohio town.”
Directed by David Roth and Kerry Long, “Bye Bye Birdie” opens Friday at Staples High School Mainstage Theatre and runs through Sunday. Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 2 p.m. Saturday; and 4 p.m. Sunday.
Cast member and Staples High School graduate Alexandra Rappaport promises the show will be enjoyed by kids and adults.
“The audience is going to love how much fun this show is,” Rappaport said. “There is exciting dancing and hilarious comedy, and the music is upbeat with colorful costumes and set pieces. There's never a dull moment.”
Kaitlin Brozek of Weston, who plays Ursula Merkle, is equally enthusiastic about the show.
“Bye Bye Birdie is one of the most fun Broadway shows I know, and the best part is how enjoyable it is for all ages,” Brozek said. “With fun dancers and many scenes including crowds of teenage girls screaming and swooning over the very charming Conrad Birdie, the show is sure to bring smiles to the audience’s faces.”
Tickets for the show are $10 for students and $15 for adults, and available online. Tickets will also be available at the door, as available, 30 minutes before to the show. Cash or checks will only be accepted at the door.
