STAMFORD, Conn. — With Tax Day coming up — April 17 to be exact — it’s easy for people to get stressed. However, Stamford hypnotist Meg Tocantins believes that with her latest CD, “Guided Relaxation for Taxpayers,” she can eliminate the worry for her clients.
The idea came to her a few years ago, after a number of her clients said they were getting stressed out doing their taxes. People often begin to worry about what to claim, and what not to, and get a feeling of worry or anxiety about making mistakes, she said.
“You’re doing what you need to do, just get it done,” Tocantins said is the point she tries to emphasize with her CD.
People were not born being nervous about taxes, but they learn to associate negatives with the process and the anxiety sets in. Her CD tries to change that relationship, which is the goal of hypnotism in general, she said. Most of her clients want to stop bad habits, such as quitting smoking, Tocantins said.
She added that she knows the CD and its message works, because she used it herself. While working on her own taxes, she got a stomachache as the usual anxiety set in. At that point, she listened to the CD to calm her nerves.
Another way Tocantins helps to relieve stress is by offering the “Guided Relaxation for Taxpayers” for free. The 10-minute relaxation CD can be downloaded from her website.
Tocantins, a Stamford resident, has offices in Stamford and New York City and also helps clients over the phone. She has practiced hypnotism since 1993.
