Seniors Enjoy Early Taste of Chowdafest

The third annual Chowdafest isn't until Feb. 5, but a group of more than 70 senior citizens enjoyed a taste of what's to come during a pre-event promotion Saturday afternoon at the Westport Center for Senior Activities.

For the event, three of the 18 restaurants in this year's competition served up donations: DaPietros in Westport made a roasted cauliflower and garlic soup, Tavern on Main put together barley chicken and mushroom soup and Rory's of Darien offered its New England Clam Chowder.

For seniors, including Sam Brody, the sampling helped generate enthusiasm for next month's event. "It's official," said Brody. "I'm a chowda-head and looking forward to another great event: Wouldn't miss it."

Seniors also donated canned and dry goods as part of the sampling event.

The annual soup and chowder competition, put together by volunteers from the Unitarian Church in Westport, benefits the Connecticut Food Bank. Last year, the event raised money enough to fund 15,000 meals.

Restaurants from around Fairfield County will be participating in this event in which children and adults alike sample and vote for their favorites.

Admission is $6 for adults, $5 if you bring a canned good, and $2 for kids. The event will be held at Bedford Middle School from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb 5.
