WESTPORT, Conn. With a pair of black Aldo peep-toe high heels and leather purse in hand, Westport resident Lisa Paavola made her way to a checkout counter at the new Goodwill store in Westport during its grand opening Friday afternoon.
Paavola, who has lived in Westport for two years, said she had never been to Goodwill before. But she said she decided to check it out after she drove by the new store, located at 1700 Post Road E., and saw all the cars going in and out of the parking lot.
Im pleasantly surprised, she said. Id driven past the old location hundreds of times but never once stopped by. I had a totally different picture in my mind of what Goodwill was, and this is nothing like I thought it would be.
What surprised Paavola the most was the condition of the merchandise. As she browsed, she said nothing she saw looked used.
Beside not coming in a box, these [shoes] practically look brand new, Paavola said.
Shopper Regina Mascia, of Southport, shared Paavolas enthusiasm. Having been to the ols store at 1572 Post Road E., Mascia said the new location is impressive. Not only is it more modern and spacious, she said theres also a wider variety of merchandise.
The stores inventory included mens, womens and childrens apparel; housewares; electronics, including a like-new Apple computer for only $500; books; VHS; records; kitchen appliances; dishware; shoes; toys; antiques and more.
I think theres a big misconception about Goodwill, Mascia said. Its not just quote/unquote poor people that shop here. Its for us savvy shoppers who realize you dont need to buy everything new especially nowadays. And, just because something is more expensive doesnt mean its always better than something thats a bargain.
The store, which also includes a drive-up donation center and Career Center, is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays.
